It is believed that the place where a rice hall was built for passengers traveling on the highway from south to north central province during the Dutugemunu period connecting Buttala South Province and North Central Province, later became the rice hall.
When traveling on the Colombo-Monaragala road, you will find the town of Buttala at the 232nd kilometer.
Historical information confirms that Uva Province, which was a prosperous region even in prehistoric times, was inhabited by people who encouraged the nation throughout the history of Sri Lanka.
Many Buddhist monuments built by Laknarapathi in ancient times are located in Buttala town of Monaragala district. Yudhgana Rajamaha Vihara, Dematamal Vihara, Maligavila Rajamaha Vihara are famous there.
It is said that the place where Dutugemunu and Prince Saddhatissa fought in the 2nd century BC was considered a battlefield and later it became Yudhgana.
According to the statement of the Department of Archeology, such a watch-stone cannot be seen anywhere in Sri Lanka. The Bosat statue in Maligavila is the largest Buddha statue ever found in the world and it is carved from a rock called Chandrakanti which shines in the moonlight.

Buttala local council jurisdiction is located at a distance of 17 km from Monaragala town in Monaragala district of Uva province. Monaragala, Kataragama, Wellawaya and Badalkumbura are bordering the local council areas.
Spread over an area of 698.77 square kilometers, the Buttala local council area consists of 29 village officer domains and 11 constituencies.
According to secondary data, the total population of the local council jurisdiction is 65692, of which 32230 are males and 33462 are females. The total number of families in the division is 17564. In percentage terms, Sinhalese is 98.19%, Tamil 0.59%, Muslim 1.19% and Malay 0.006%.
This area is a tourist attraction and supports local development by developing the livelihood of the people with lakes, protected forests, sacred places and other natural resources and giving priority to the agriculture of the area.
On the implementation of the local councils act number 15 of 1987, the village council system was abolished and the establishment of local councils started. Mr. MB Arapaksha has become the first chairman of the new local council. Buttala Pradeshiya Sabha has shouldered the development.
